Tilly
Pollock 2005 SOLD I swore I'd never do a Tilly painting (a former landmark in Asbury Park NJ) Too many other local artists have already. My friend Ron gave me a discarded window, the colors and level of distress in the frame inspired me to do a Tilly. I've played around with the Pollock drip technique more for an understanding of him than for my own expression. My favorite Pollock work is from his 1951 "black & white show." In those works he introduced imagery. Some believe it was to prove he had far more control of the paint than the detractors gave him credit for. Others felt he was taking the technique to the next level, either case the '51 show was a failure. Nothing sold. His prior 2 shows were well received and somewhat successful. He could've kept the formulas of the past work and maintained a decent living by cranking out what the public expected. What made him a great artist is seeking artistic growth over the financial success that stagnation would've brought him. Pollock never painted to please gallery owners or collectors, he painted for himself and only when he felt inspired to do so. Like Van Gogh he painted for the sake of painting. My Tilly? Yea I could've done an exact reproduction of the one on the wall, I just didn't feel like it. Styles |
